MTAG Works: Providing Educational Opportunities for More Skilled Mississippians
The Mississippi Tuition Assistance Grant (MTAG) was created in 1995 to help middle-class families afford college, but the program hasn’t changed to meet the needs of today’s families or today’s workforce. A State Aid Redesign Taskforce of education and workforce leaders was convened in 2022 to think about how MTAG might be updated to help more Mississippians access the education or skills they need to fully contribute to today’s workforce. The result of that task force is a proposal to revise MTAG as “MTAG Works”.
A digital resource and information-sharing page with optional advocacy activity for MTAG Works is now available: https://ascentto55percent.org/mtag-works(opens in a new window).

State Aid Study Committee, 2018-19
The demand for state-funded student financial aid continues to grow each year. Unfortunately, the state has not been able to fully fund the Student Financial Aid programs for the past several years. A group of legislators led by Chairman Briggs Hopson asked for a comprehensive review of the Student Financial Aid programs in hopes of finding a long-term solution that meets state and student needs. The State Aid Study Committee was appointed to evaluate the programs and discuss possible solutions.
The committee held four meetings. Information shared during the meetings is included here.
